Holiday Home

I put all the main elements of this painting except the curtains and the boat in 2003. I then put it away in my studio store with dozens of other unfinished paintings.

The elements were all ‘sketched in’ and not completed as they are now.

Then in 2007 in preparation for an exhibition I examined the unfinished paintings to find some that I could compete in a few months time and this was one of them.

Because my technique involves using thin layers of paint and having to wait a few days when the first layer is dry before I can paint the next one the the process is very lengthy and a picture is often forgotten about.

I often require six or seven layers of paint to get a good result.

At first I had difficulty in getting used to this technique and I wanted paintings finished in a day but with so many years of work I have accepted this technique which simply evolved itself for me over the years.

I have never before painted a vase and flowers like this one and it pleases me when I invent something new.

Flower Power

This for me is a large painting because most of them are only half to three quarters this size.

It is only one of two or three pictures that I painted without people, birds or animals.

I initially had part of a chair with a cat sitting on it at the bottom left hand corner but eventually took it out as it improved the composition of the painting.

Ideally I like to keep an unfinished paining at home so that I can look at it now and then and invariably notice something that needs improving.

Here I took out the cat and chair added a flower and put some yellowy orange colour on the leaves, all down towards the end of 2008.

Bird Watching

For the past 10 years or so sheep have absorbed me more than any other subject matter. To make this painting different I decided to put the sea as a background.

It occurred to me most when traveling by car from Edinburgh on the A1, I saw a small island in the sea so why not try it here.

Two island and the cloudy sky gave much better composition, so the main elements of the painting were settled.

Sea Lions

This is one of my favorite paintings, because it seems so simple and does not contain any decorative matter.

It was not easy for me to restrict myself to this simplicity and I had some prblems with the lions expressions.

I had to "doodle" with paint in their faces, trying this and that, for example, with mouth close to the nose or distant, long or short, lips bent or straight and similarly with the eyes and the shape of their heads.
