Born in Poland but has lived in Britain since 1948, mainly in London, Brighton and Preston.
He has no formal art training and was a civil engineer concerned with the design of bridges. He initially spent much of his leisure time encouraging self taught painters of talent in the North West of England to paint in their own personal way. This included his mother-in-law Margaret Baird and about 40 other painters.
Reference to some of them, ‘The Marek Circle’ is made in the ‘Rona Guide to the World of Naïve Art’
Initially Marek painted sporting themes but later gave way to pastoral scenes of a more tranquil nature. Lush Victorian interiors soon followed, painted with a characteristic ‘velvety’ technique.
More recently Marek has concentrated on close-ups of animals and people. In general he tends to paint the more comfortable aspects of a life that had to many painful incidents in its stages.
He has exhibited in England and abroad and has a number of paintings in Museum and public collections. His work has also been reproduced in a number of books, magazines, prints and cards.
